Welcome back to our Flavius blog!

The Flavius platform allows its users to translate any XML files. In order to separate useful data from useless data, Flavius has implemented a feature which enables you to decide which parts of your XML file should be translated and which ones should not be modified.

This feature is based on the Xpath standard (http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath/), which determines the address of the node to be translated in your XML file.

Consequently, only the data contained in a node matched by the Xpath will be extracted to be translated.

In all the other nodes, the data will be ignored and hence not translated.

Proper nouns give an illustrating example of the utility of this feature: we don’t need to translate them !

To get accustomed to this technology, please find here a txt file along with an example and the detailed explanations : XML. If you want to extract the XML parts and test them, don’t forget to save it as an XML file first.

Now that your know how to write an XML configuration file, here is the  customization process of your XML files:

1)      Import your XML custom templates :

-          Go to your Dashboard and then to the section “XML configuration files”

-          Click on “Manage XML conf.files”

-          Upload your configuration file by clicking on   

-          Once you have uploaded your new XML configuration file, you can delete it, update it (by uploading a new configuration file) or download it unto your computer.

2)      Go back to your dashboard and create a new job. Go to “My multilingual files” section and upload the XML file you want to custom by the previous configuration file.

3)      Choose the option (custom) Nameofyourconfigurationfile in “File type” dropdown menu.

4)      Finish selecting the translation options  (languages, …)

5)      At the end of the process, you will obtain a zipped file containing your translated XML file as well as the original file.

Now you can easily manage the translation of your XML files !

Since the release of the latest version of Flavius, you have the possibility to export the revisions you have made to the translation of your site or application by using TMX files, or “translation memories”.
A TMX file (Translation Memory Xchange) enables to list text segments, i.e. text parts, in a source language (i.e. original language) and in a target language (i.e. translation language).

Why export your revisions in TMX format?

• To save the modifications added to the translation of your site or file: even if the revision changes are saved online on Flavius, it is always comforting to keep a copy on your computer.
• To use your revisions in another translation project: you have already translated your site but you have also a blog which deals with the same subject, it is highly possible that they have certain terms or sentences in common. Having exported the revisions of your site in TMX format will enable you to import them on Flavius as a translation memory. Thus they will be re-used during the translation of your blog, which will save you from revising twice the same text segments!

How to export your revisions:

From the «Job details » page of your project, click on “Export the translation memory”. A popup window containing the settings of this export will open and thus you will be able to configure the file(s) to download by answering the three following questions:

• What translation languages do you want to export (one or several in particular or all)?
• Do you want to also export the comments you have made during the revision?
• In cases where you would have already used a translation memory for this project, do you want to include segments which come from this source (and thus which have not been revised by you afterwards)?

With the latest version of Flavius, it is now possible to manage PO and POT files. These formats are known by all the software developers as a part of the software world’s most widespread localization solution: Gettext.

Gettext is a tool enabling you to extract “strings” (chains of text) from a great variety of programming language and turn them into “templates” files (POT), which will be then divided in as many files as the number of languages to translate (PO).

These PO files must then be recompiled in MO and reintegrated in the software code.

As soon as you have your PO file (or POT), you can import them on Flavius by using the scenario “My Multilingual Files” and by selecting the “PO/POT” format.

Flavius will translate them, enabling you to review them with all the integrated tools, and to download them as complete PO files afterwards.

Flavius has offered, since the beginning, the review of your website in context. In other words, you can visualize your site translated and edit the translations as you navigate; having the context makes the review easier, quicker, and of better quality.

Equally, when you are reviewing the character strings coming from an application, context elements are a precious help to go fast and guarantee an accurate translation.

Today’s good news is that information on the context is now available when you are reviewing your multilingual resources files (files with formats .resX, .po, .pot, .xlf and many others).

In other words, when you are on the review interface, you can see with one click information on the context, i.e. data enabling you to have more precisions on the place where the translated character string is located on the application. This information naturally depends on the format of the file to translate.

It can be of several types:

• Information on the localization file: line number, comments added by string-extraction tools, etc.
• Useful information for software developers: source file(s) where the text is used
• Comments written by humans: as in the example below

Example: Localization of Blender (3D modeling application)

Instant translation of the term “Shorcut” given by Flavius is the word “Raccourci”.

The term “shorcut” is used many times in the Blender application, it’s a true keyword. One must be very careful with its translation. One can for example wonder if “raccourci” is a sufficiently-clear translation, maybe “raccourci clavier” would be more appropriate….

If one looks at the context by clicking on the blue icon (see below), one notices that the software developer has explicitly specified that this term should be kept as short as possible to not disrupt the design. So it is preferable to keep the term “Raccourci” and not “Raccourci clavier” for example.

To conclude, two recommendations: do not hesitate to look at the context when you are reviewing your translations and do not forget to add comments on your application if you are a software developer!
